What’s YOUR Word for 2016?

With January over, and all our ridiculous resolutions out of the way, let’s get ready to tackle the rest of the year. Have you heard of choosing one word to guide your life for the upcoming year?

The idea is to ditch the unrealistic resolutions we typically set at the new year, and instead, choose one word that sums up the changes you would like to see happen in the next year.

Use one word to drive you to your goals. Use one word to stay motivated. Use one word to filter your decisions.

I usually spend time in January asking God to reveal a word for me to focus on for the year. Last year, my word was “Prepare.”  As I reflected on last year, I was disappointed in how I honored my word. I did some things to prepare, but not even close to the things the Lord put on my heart as important.

This morning, our loving God gently gave me a “tongue lashing” through His Word. But, He also gave me my word for 2016: Faithful Servant.

Ok, I know, it’s two words! Through Matthew 24-25, the Lord showed me that I need two words this year.  In Matthew 25, Jesus used 3 parables (brides with lamps, servants with gold, and shepherd sorting sheep/goats) to teach the disciples: 1) prepare wisely for the Lord’s Kingdom; 2) understand that each person is given tasks according to her own abilities (not someone else’s!); and 3) be faithful to use your abilities to serve the Lord.

In Matthew 25, when the master returns to see how the servants did with the task he gave them, he is pleased with the two servants who did something with the tasks given:

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!'” ~ Matt 25:21

So, for 2016, I will do my best to be a “Faithful Servant.” I will be faithful with the tasks the Lord has given me. I will remember that I am the Master’s servant, first and foremost. Before I am wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend or co-worker, I must be a “Faithful Servant” of my King.

I can’t wait! Let’s go God ~ bring on 2016…

Do you have a word for 2016? What is it?

  1. I love the idea of using a word for the year rather than setting a ton of resolutions that you’re likely to forget or are tired of by the end of Feb.

So you’ve motivated me to seek God for my word.

Loved this post, thank you for inspiring me to make realistic goals through the eyes of God and not self.
